Genius Hour #2

Genius Hour #2
For my second Genius Hour I am doing How does Technology affect human bodies and our health?
L.
Why I want to learn about this?
I want to learn about How technology affects human bodies and our health because technology is huge all around the world and lots of people, mostly youth are excessively using technology. Weather its an Phone, Tablet, Computer or T.V its all the same and can have the same result. I don't know a lot about what can actually happen if your on your devices to much so that's why I chose this as my topic.

How might this benefit others?
- This can benefit others just by knowing what your technology might be doing to your health and body. Also So that others know when and how long you should be on technology to ensure safety.

A.
What I wonder about my topic?
- How can technology affect humans in the long term?
- How can technology affect humans in the short term?
- Why is it not good for your eyes to be on technology in the dark?
- What is the biggest threat to your body when using technology excessively?

I hope to learn what is so good about using technology and What isn't so good about it.

U.
My research:
Being hooked onto technology and devices can cause psychological issues for example Distractions, expectation of instant gratification and possibly depression. Other than affecting users, use of technology can have a negative repercussion on your physical health that can cause neck strains, vision problems and also hearing loss. Staring at your phone, tablet or other device all day could patently wreck your spine. Being on technology all day doesn't only strain your back but could also cause eye strain and headaches.

Anxiety is also another huge impact that technology gives you. Lots of humans learn a lot using there devices but is it really doing you good? What your learning online can also be taught out of a book . A book doesn't give off any blue light that you are staring at while reading it but your phone does.

Phones are the biggest and most popular type of technology on the planet right now and about 6 billion people own a cell phone. Just looking down at your phone, your neck is at an equivalent angle as a 8 year old child would be be sitting on your neck and is NOT good for body.

Saint Clare Of Assisi

Image result for saint clare of assisiShe was known for her generosity and bravery, honesty and loyalty but most importantly being a peacemaker with a fearless heart. Saint Clare Of Assisi and was born on July 16 1194 and died August 11 1253. Saint Clare is from Italy, Assisi and was born to a very wealthy family. She was desired to give herself totally to God and leave behind all her wealth to live a humble and poor life. Saint Clare once heard the future Saint Francis preaching in the streets and felt like Francis would understand her wish to serve and be with God. Saint Clare and Francis both became very close friends over time. Then they both decided that when Palm Sunday came it would be Clare`s very important day while she was 18 years old. On Palm Sunday Clare attended mass dressed in beautiful clothes with the nobles, also the bishop attended this mass. Then at the altar Francis cut off Clare`s very long hair and Clare promised her life, love and spirit to Christ our God. Finally in the outskirts of town Clare started a group of nuns under Francis’s orders, it was called the Poor Clare`s. The poor Clare`s ate no meat and slept only on the ground. They lived a life of prayer, silence and fasting. She died after 27 years of illness but her community still exists today. Saint Clare was Canonized in 1255.

This Saint is inspirational because she dedicated her time to other people and always wanted the best for her community. She would think about others before herself and that is one of the reasons why she became a Saint. An example was she protected her home (Assisi) from invaders twice and instead of getting to safety she thought about everyone else’s safety first because she felt it was the right thing to do and to me that’s a true hero.

Saint Clare is also inspirational because she is an example of being brave, bold and a great leader. I think this because Clare wanted to serve and follow Christ and carry on the beliefs of the church to others. Saint Clare also really expressed her feeling and love towards God by praying several times each day in peace and quiet so that she could truly talk with God. Also I think Saint Clare shows bravery because as long as she knows God and Christ are with her she can do what is right without any doubts.

Saint clare is a very memorable person and can not be forgotten as a Saint. I feel we are a little alike because I do go to church and go to a catholic school where we talk a lot about our religion and I am always looking to help out others when in need and support my family and friends before myself. Also I am a little different than her because  I think Saint Clare of Assisi made some very wise and interesting choices before and after becoming a Saint but she was happy with what she was doing. Just remember you’re never making a bad choice when it comes to following and serving Christ. And just like Saint Clare said “We become what we love + Who we love shapes what we become”. This is personally one of my favourite quotes that Clare said because I feel that we all need to calm our lives down and just take a moment to realize what we are doing to create the life we are living and make sure it’s something you're happy with.

A Race To The Finish article.

A Race to The Finish!!

On currents 4 kids I chose to read the article "A race to the finish". This article is about the Barkley Marathon which is apparently the hardest, longest and toughest marathon in the world. The Barkley Marathon is a cross country race that is 160 kilometers long also 4 times longer than a normal marathon. You are given 60 hours to finish the race but its not an ordinary race because your not racing other people your racing against time. Overall in 32 years only 15 people have successfully finished the race in under 60 hours. Just like the saying goes "If you don't beat the Barkley in 60 hours, the Barkley beats you". The Barkley Marathon isn't your usual race because they are all set up in a way for you to win and succeed but the Barkley is made for you to fail.

In my personal opinion I think its very obvious that this is a race with a low chance of you actually completing it in under 60 minutes. Its very hard and intense! Finally for those 15 people that have completed this 160 kilometer race, congratulations to you!

Should phones be aloud in schools?

The article " Busy Signal ", about cell phones and banning them to help students communicate face to face in stead of screen to screen is a very detailed article and has two sides to it. In the article it stats "Teachers hoped a mobile ban would reduce distraction". In my opinion that's not true because some students may need there phones for personal reasons not including checking Instagram or snap-chat but maybe due to it helping them in subjects or having a way to communicate with a family member in case of an emergency. I do use social media and google quit often but while i'm at school my focus is not on social media but yes I do go onto Google chrome a lot while i'm in class. You might be wondering if im aloud and yes I am because our school doesn't have a No phone rule because electronics are a big part of my learning also as a learning tool. But theirs also another side to my opinion that I also believe in and that is that student do also disobeying teachers and supervisors and do go on there phones to text friends, take pictures and just have a fun time doing what they should NOT be doing at school. There for allowing cell phones in schools are a risk but also a solution to problems.

As said in the article a researcher named Theirry Karsenti took a survey that shows 88% of the student's he surveyed are not allowed to use there phones in class and that didn't really surprise me because technology is just starting to be a really big part of schools and teaching methods. Teachers are now starting to get there students more involved and to participate online knowing its technology and that's what kids love these days.

Finally, I personally love using electronics and having the privilege to use them at school. I also know some schools may not have the same privileges as us to use all these things but the question is, Have they been given a chance? Banning elcetronics from schools due to something that has happened with them is understandable but techgnology is pretty big at the moment and I strongley belive all students should get to experiance them. I know "Busy signal" is not about giving students the right to try electronics and new technology but I thought it would be nice to have brought it up. Last but not least going back to my first question "should phones be aloud in schools?'' I say yes, What about you?

March Break Madness

March Break Madness

Image result for MARCH BREAKOver my march break I did a lot of fun and adventurous things. For example I had a soccer tournament in Toronto and we were playing a year up but that didn't stop us from playing at 100%. Over my march break I also hung out with Friends and went out to eat but my most favorite part was going back to Toronto, staying over night, shopping at square one mall and going swimming! We arrived at square one mall around 12 pm on Saturday and first went to the food court because I was about to die of hunger ( I'm literally always hungry, ha ha). I love to shop and buy clothing but one of the main reasons why we went out shopping at this super huge mall is because I was looking for my Confirmation dress. I was going to be very picky and not just take some random dress. We went into a bunch of stores looking for the right dress but then didn't come out with success. We also went into a hole load of other stores just shopping for clothing because like its just fun. There was a lot of people and was very busy. Lots of stores had huge sales for 40-70 percent of and that's a great deal if you ask me. We ate in the food court and just spent around 6-7 hours at the mall. After the mall we headed to our hotel called The Sandman Hotel in Toronto. I really wanted to go swimming so right when we got in the room I but my bathing suit on and bolted down the hallway and hoped into the elevator. The pool was humongous! There was a big water slide that went around 3 stories of the building, an over sized pool and my favorite part... A hot tub. We went to bed around 11 but there were a bunch of little kids running around the hallway screaming at waking people up so it was hard to sleep but we managed. Overall it was a great experience and I loved it! What did you do over your March Break?

Canada 150!

Canada 150!!!
L.Canada is turning the big 150 this July 1st! I'm just in love with our country and can't believe its been around for almost 150 years and has positively increased in almost everything we do! Reasons why I think Canada is an amazing place to be are because we have amazing food and personally my favourite is original Poutine. Canada is also unique in so many ways for example we all stand proud and tall as one nation to sing our deeply loved song O Canada! Something I also adore about Canada is how were open to new learning, new friendships and new opperatonities all the time and most importantly we are a free, peaceful and courageous country filled with people to make you feel welcome and feel like you belong here!

A.
 Some questions I have are:

What is the most popular sports team in Canada?

Who was the first to come up with poutine?

Why is Hockey such a big part of Canada?

Why is maple syrup important to Canada?

Is our currant flag the only flag we have had?

I look forward to finding answers to my question during my research part in section U of this blog because I'm always open for new learning especially about my home country Canada!

U.
I researched my questions on Canada that I had and came across a few answers:

Why is maple syrup important to Canada?
I found out that Canada's early settlers learned how to tap the maple trees and boil the sap down to make the maple syrup. Also after Canada was settled by Europeans, Maple syrup productions provided a convenient source of sugar to Canadian's and an important food source as well.

Why is Hockey such a big part of Canada?
Before I researched this question I already had a tiny bit of knowledge on it, but not a lot. What I knew before my research was that Hockey is Canada's second national sport right behind Lacrosse and sports are a very big deal most Canadian's including myself! I learned that Canada can not ignore the fact that we are so good at Hockey just enjoy playing it. I know this because over 500,000 children, women and men are registered in Hockey programs or teams all over Canada. Also in the professional level almost 50% of the players are Canadian's and I think that says a lot about our passion towards hockey!

History on Canadian national flag?
The flag of Canada, most referred to as Canadian flag was designed by George F.G. Stanley and was then adopted on February 15, 1965. Also many other flags were designed by military forces and Canadian officials that contain the maple leaf motif in the same fashion.

Awesomeness

Awesomeness blog!

When you drop your phone on a tile and does not crack.

Image result for awesomenessThat feeling when you get a new phone and are rubbing it in to all your friends telling them how special you feel and how they don't have a phone like yours well, then everything turns around and you are the one that is in bad position because BANG, it slips out of your hand, you see it falling, your panicking, your friends are screaming, your reaction is everything but good, but nothing helps the fact of what just happened. Once your new IPhone 7s plus hits the ground, it lands screen first and is flat on the ground and is just sitting there. You don't know weather its broken or okay but either way you are ready to yell and scream like there is no tomorrow.

Image result for awesome blogUsually when this kind of stuff happens you just feel like your always the unlucky one and your telling your self " why, why me?" but you still don't know if it's cracked or not. But knowing myself I am just worried about what my parents will say, what they will do and what happens next!!! If you made me pick a couple words to describe my feelings right now and what I'm thinking it would have to be scared like a elephant is about to sit on you and end you ( Lol ) or even as nervous as watching a action packed movie with a nerve racking scene that could end the whole movie, like do you understand how serious this is!

That second when you lean in to grab your phone, you know that its the moment of truth that will decide the rest of your life, also weather or not your parents will ever trust you again with things as expensive as your LIFE. For example your life means everything to all the people around you but to you your phone is the same situation!!

Some tips on what to do before you pick it up are, If its cracked don't tell your siblings because they will go right a head and tell on you in a blink of an eye no matter how much you bribe them. If its not broken then make sure to get your self a protection case that will actually do something to protect your phone in case this ever happens again or if an over 100 pound thing like harambe falls on it, because I am pretty sure we have all been there am I right?

Now once you have spent the right amount of time so at least 20 to 30 minutes discussing this with your friends what is going to happen, then its time to reach in and grab the dang phone. As your hand is moving towards the phone your shaking, your sweating buckets and buckets of water and now when you flip it over you gently close your eyes and wait for the reaction of your friends then open your eyes. BANG!!! your life is saved, theirs no cracks, no marks, no nothing! You just spent all this time wondering and worrying what this means for you when in stead you could have just picked up the stupid phone and saw it was as clean and shinny as a glass cup that was just washed about 30 thousand times. Now that's AWESOME
